It is a real rendez-vous to attend the saint laurent show. at the newly renovated carreau du temple, security guards block gazing onlookers from nearing the entrance…the invitation, an album of black and white photos, becomes a holy grail. on the front row: pierre bergé, betty catroux, catherine deneuve, jean-paul gaultier and azzedine alaïa on one side, and on the other, we spot alex turner (arctic monkeys), miles kane and daft punk (without their helmets!)…that is what happens at saint laurent, at least with hedi slimane running the show: causing as much excitement in the room as on the runway…we are faced with a an enormous metallic installation designed by john baldessari, and spine-tingling music (composed for the occasion by american band cherry glazerr) as the models transport us back to the 60s, evoking polly maggoo or twiggy…a black blazer is worn over a white shirt and its satin bowtie, dresses and skirts are ultra short and flared, inundated with sequins – multicoloured, but also gold and silver – matched with biker jackets and boyfriend coats in leather, velvet, tweed or fur. shoes with baby stilettos or low boots, also designed with rhinestones or in black patent, epitomize the overall look: cool, rock’n’roll and chic. offering more than just originality, slimane imposes a style that everybody will hasten to replicate…yves saint laurent had the same impact during his era…music from the fashion show
