UK consumers like to ‘second screen’ on Sunday evenings, shopping online as they also watch TV with 20:00 being the favourite time for online browsing, new data shows.
But while Sunday evening sees the highest volume of credit card transactions, Monday morning at 11:00 is the peak time for the value of transactions, suggesting people are buying online while at work, perhaps after having visited physical stores to try on items over the weekend.
Lloyds bank analysed transactions in the 12 months to August and said the ‘showrooming’ trend comes through very clearly. Consumers are trying on goods in-store then looking for the best prices at home on Sunday evening or at work on Monday morning.
Paul Gordon, managing director of credit cards for Lloyds Bank, said that the new shopping behaviour is also encouraged by retailers “who offer sales and discounts over long weekends, often ending on a Monday.”
But Lloyds also said that while UK online spending is larger than the combined spend France, Spain and Italy, physical stores still see the biggest spend.
As much as 80% of shopping is done in-store and Saturday remains the busiest shopping day of the week, particularly between 11;30 and 16:00. Friday is the second most popular shopping day in-store, especially in the afternoon. But while Sunday is a favourite for e-shoppers, its physical store growth potential is hurt by regulations forcing shops to close early.
