Tiffany & Co. commits to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

The jewelry brand announced on Thursday it plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050, joining other leading companies around the world in a bid to lessen the environmental impact of its business and protect future generations from the impact of climate change.

As part of an initiative organized by The B Team, a not-for-profit coalition of global business leaders, Tiffany & Co. CEO Frédéric Cumenal joined in signing an open letter to Heads of State that emphasizes the importance of a long-term climate goal and highlights the bold actions of the private sector.

He commented: “As a global iconic brand and leader in sustainable luxury, Tiffany is proud to join other responsible businesses in pledging net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2050. This continues our commitment to protecting our precious natural environment and we hope to inspire others to do the same.”

As part of the pledge, the internationally renowned jeweler commits to adopting a science-based emissions reduction target, procuring 100% of electricity from renewable sources, leading a responsible corporate engagement in climate policy and removing commodity-driven deforestation from all supply chains by 2020.

Some of Tiffany’s sustainable solutions in the past have included the replacement of energy-intensive lights in retail displays with efficient LED lights, an effort that the brand will continue to implement on a global basis. In 2014 it also expanded this retrofit project to include LED overhead lighting, and by 2015 end the jeweler will reach 65 Tiffany & Co. retail stores with this technology.

The company is also implementing a variety of energy-saving and emission-reducing programs, including the use of solar arrays.
