Nike publishes 2020 Impact Report, sets new targets for 2025

International sportswear giant Nike, Inc. has outlined its progress with issues of sustainability, corporate responsibility and diversity in its 2020 Impact Report and revealed new goals for these areas for 2025.

In 2020, in line with its sustainable commitments, Nike launched its Supplier Climate Action Program, which seeks to promote carbon reductions at its material and finished goods manufacturers. And, according to its Impact Report, the Beaverton, Oregon-based sportswear group has already seen solid progress in its supply chain.

The company currently uses 100% renewable energy in its owned and operated facilities in the U.S. and Canada, while its textile dyeing and finishing suppliers have reduced their freshwater usage by 30%, a decrease which significantly exceeds Nike’s target for 2020.

The group’s Tier 1 finished goods footwear suppliers also diverted 99.9% of the company’s manufacturing waste from landfill in 2020.

Community-focused projects launched by Nike over the course of the last year include the Coaching Girls training module for volunteer youth coaches. The initiative, which builds on the company’s partnerships with organizations such as the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, aims to foment a sport culture that is inclusive for girls.

The group also continued Made to Play, an initiative which seeks to encourage children to participate in sports and other activities. In 2020, over 6,700 Nike store employees in 29 countries volunteered more than 60,000 hours to take part in the project.

In addition, Nike has articulated efforts to promote gender and racial equality, both within the company and in wider society. In 2020 these endeavors included a combined $140 million commitment from the group’s Nike, Converse, Jordan Brand, and Michael Jordan businesses to organizations dedicated to advancing racial equality in the United States.

Within the company itself, Nike’s diversity and equality efforts meant that, as of last year, the representation of women has increased to 49.5% across its global enterprise, while 29% of the group’s VP leadership team in the U.S. is now made up of racial and ethnic minorities.

“We’re proud of the successes we’ve seen, but we know the work is still just beginning,” said Nike CEO John Donahoe in his introduction to the Impact Report, referencing the company’s continued commitment to crucial industry issues, as laid out in its new “Purpose 2025 Targets.”

“Today, as we close one set of targets, we begin our next journey. Our Purpose 2025 Targets are not just aspirations. They are a call to action – with clear goals, strategies and accountabilities,” he added.

Among Nike’s targets for 2025, the company is aiming to increase representation of women to 50% in its global corporate workforce and 45% in leadership positions at the VP level and above. Representation of racial and ethnic minorities is expected to be 35% at director level and above in the United States.

In terms of environmental commitments, the group plans to reduce greenhouse gas emission in its owned or operated facilities by 70% over the next five years.

The company also intends to be diverting 100% of its waste from landfill by 2025, with at least 80% of this waste being recycled back into Nike products and other goods. As for water, Nike aims to achieve a reduction of 25% in freshwater usage per kg in its textile dyeing and finishing.
