Mylo gets Eurofins vegan verification mark

Bolt Threads announced on Wednesday that its Mylo faux leather has been verified as a vegan material after successful completion of the Eurofins vegan verification programme, which includes the analysis of all inputs for the presence of animal DNA. 

Mylo is one of the first materials of its type to receive this verification and it’s an important development in the more widespread use of vegan leathers for the fashion sector as it's a lot more supple than many of the previous materials that were on the market. That was one of the qualities that attracted Stella McCartney to it and she launched clothing products made from the material earlier this year.

The Vegan Verification testing programme is a robust process that should help to boost products made from Mylo in the eyes of many consumers who are looking for reassurance that items really are vegan.

Bolt said the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) DNA analysis is comprehensive “as it has the potential to pick up all fish, mammal, bird, insect, crustacean, and mollusc species in a single test. This testing regime, coupled with a detailed document review and risk assessment of the manufacturing process makes the Eurofins/Chem-MAP protocol one of the most thorough vegan verification programmes currently available in today’s marketplace”.

As well as Stella McCartney, Lululemon is using the material and luxury powerhouse Kering is too. 

Made from mycelium -- the underground root structure of mushrooms -- Mylo is certified bio-based and developed using a process that’s designed for low environmental impact.
