The house of Moschino has announced that Jeremy Scott is stepping down as creative director of the Milan-based marque, after a decade long rein.

Scott has been at the helm of the Italian luxury house since October 2013 “with his groundbreaking Fall/Winter 2014 collection that launched a thousand debates on the role of fashion in the annals of art, consumerism, and social commentary,” the house noted in a release.

The American-born designer succeeded Rossella Jardini, who helmed the company for almost two decades following the death of founder Franco Moschino, from AIDS related illnesses. In his creations, Scott faithfully maintained the house’s tradition for witty, humorous clothing, leavened with a sense of surrealism.

“These past 10 years at Moschino have been a wonderful celebration of creativity and imagination. I am so proud of the legacy I am leaving behind. I would like to thank Massimo Ferretti for the honor of leading this iconic house,” the 47-year-old Scott said in the release.

“I would also like to thank all of my fans around the world who celebrated me, my collections, and my vision for without you none of this would be possible,” added Scott, who staged his final collection in February in Milan. Presented in a battered old factory in north Milan, it was a surrealist punk moment where Scott played on the humoristic DNA of the maison. Way over the top yet containing some highly wearable and playful clothes. Like the strictly cut wool bouclé suits, their miniskirts finished with undulating hems. Or Siouxsie and the Banshees black stretch cocktails, with sleeves made in semi-sheer mesh; or very sexy mini bomber jackets; or saucy blazer dresses.

Everything finished with hefty boot buckles, chain belts, cartridge bracelets and huge love emblem earrings. Every model done up with giant Mohawk wigs, courtesy of some super hair styling by Paul Hanlon. All presented on a great catwalk cast – Stella Maxwell, Adut Akech, Imaan Hammam – and an impressive front row – Ashley Graham, J Balvin, Lana Condor and Mia Khalifa.

Since 1999, Moschino has been part of the Aeffe group, whose cornerstone label is Alberta Ferretti. Under Scott’s guidance, Moschino hooked up with H&M in 2018; participated in the Met Gala’s Camp exhibition; and dressed Katy Perry’s worldwide tour.

“Scott has penned a fundamental chapter in the legacy of the brand with his fearless and show stopping pop-camp style and incisive humor - true to the renowned codes of the house,” Aeffe added.

Commenting on the departure, Massimo Ferretti, chairman of Aeffe said: “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity of working with the creative force that is Jeremy Scott. I would like to thank him for his ten years of commitment to Franco Moschino’s legacy house and for ushering in a distinct and joyful vision that will forever be a part of Moschino history.”
