Jeanologia teams up with Archroma to create sustainable denim washing solution

Spanish company Jeanologia, specialised in the development of eco-sustainable technologies for the textile industry, continues with its efforts to make denim products more sustainable by joining forces with Swiss chemicals company Archroma. Together, the two have launched a solution to reduce the environmental impact of denim washing.

Jeanologia and Archroma have launched a more sustainable solution for denim washing - Archroma - Jeanologia

The denim production process is considered one of the most polluting in the industry. Fabric cleaning is a key phase in the process and, although it can be carried out in two different ways, washing or mercerising, both require “multiple, extremely water-intensive washings (...) in order to restore optimal fabric pH and remove unfixed dyestuff and any undesirable deposits or impurities from the fabric,” as Archroma indicated on its website.

“One of such impurities released by the washing process is aniline, a substance that is classified as a category 2 carcinogen and is considered toxic to aquatic life,” added Archroma.

Jeanologia and Archroma have now created an alternative solution, aimed at addressing the issues of extensive water usage and aniline release. The new technology combines the Swiss company's aniline-free ‘Pure Indigo Icon’ dyeing method with the Spanish company’s water and chemicals-free finishing technology, called ‘G2 Dynamic’.

“The Archroma/Jeanologia solution makes it possible to create aniline-free denim, and to improve the final aspect of the fabric through a fully chemical-free and virtually water-free alternative cleaning treatment,” said Archroma.

“This partnership is another step towards transforming traditional, more polluting and water-consuming processes in the textile industry into new ones using innovative technology, improving and boosting the subsequent [denim] production stages, making them more efficient and eventually allowing companies to be more competitive, increase productivity and offer a premium-quality product that is wholly sustainable,” said Jean-Pierre Inchauspe, business director of G2 Dynamic at Jeanologia.

Jeanologia is based in Valencia and was founded in 1994. It operates 10 subsidiaries in five continents and employs 257 people. Exporting specialist machinery and services accounts for 90% of Jeanologia’s revenue and, according to the company, more than 35% of the five billion pairs of jeans manufactured worldwide every year are made using its technologies.

Archroma is based in Pratteln and specialises in sustainable chemicals solutions. It operates in 31 countries through 25 production centres and employs more than 2,800 people.
