Footwear brand Camper integrates 3D printing in design process

Spanish footwear brand Camper is relying on 3D-printing technology to accelerate the design phase of its shoe collections. By using this technology, it can create prototypes for its new models in just 24 hours.

To integrate 3D printing in the design process, Camper has deployed two printer models by Catalan producer BCN3D, according to a report published by Spanish daily paper Cinco Días on Monday.

A reduction in collection-design time and the possibility of obtaining more complex geometric shapes are the main benefits Camper expects to derive by using these printers. According to Cinco Días, the technology will also expand the range of creative possibilities at Camper’s disposal, eventually generating more sales. In addition, Camper expects to improve its time-to-market: previously, it would take between two and four weeks to have a prototype ready, using plastic models and wood, while 24 hours are now enough.

BCN3D, Camper’s 3D printing technology supplier, is a manufacturer of 3D desktop printers that has already worked with other fashion labels like Louis Vuitton, and with technology giants such as Samsung.

At least for the time being, Camper is using 3D printing for prototypes only, and not for finished products, which are manufactured at its factory in Inca, Spain.

Camper is currently in the midst of a reorganization, with recent changes to its senior design hierarchy: last June, it announced the departure of French creative director Romain Kremer, and appointed Finnish designer Achilles Ion Gabriel as creative supervisor of CamperLab. Camper was founded in 1975, and is present in more than 40 countries with 400 stores.
