Coty debuts AR-enhanced Wella Professionals mirror at CES 2019

New York-based beauty group Coty continued to demonstrate its commitment to exploring ways to enhance customer experience through augmented reality with the unveiling of the Wella Professionals Smart Mirror at the Customer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 in Las Vegas on Monday.

The mirror allows salon customers to try on different hair colors live - Instagram: @wellahair

Powered by the CareOS operating system, the mirror allows salon customers to try on different hair colors live and features 360° video capture to give users an all-round view of the proposed style.

The device, which aims to accompany clients from consultation through aftercare, also features a curated feed of content to provide customers with inspiration and can use facial recognition to reconstruct past looks, helping stylists offer an improved service over several visits.

Furthermore, the mirror allows stylists to keep in touch with their customers between visits through a connected mobile application.

“With the new Wella Professionals Smart Mirror, clients can have an even more customized session with their stylist, visualize their desired color before application, as well as maintain the relationship and service after the salon visit,” explained Coty Professional Beauty CMO Laura Simpson in a release. “Co-developed with stylists, with this new tool we are enabling them to build stronger consultations and relationships with their clients, which is critical in our industry.”

“We’ve created a flexible and portable platform that can be scaled across salons of all sizes, a major step in reinventing the salon experience for all,” added Coty Senior Director for Digital Innovation Elodie Levy.

Coty has been upping its investments in augmented and virtual reality over the course of the last year, revealing its first AR-enabled “magic mirror” for makeup try-ons in April 2018, and debuting a VR olfactory experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s Julieraque perfumery in December.

A number of other beauty brands are also participating in CES 2019, unveiling products ranging from Olay’s “Skin Advisor” platform to La Roche-Posay’s “My Skin Track pH” device.
