Abercrombie & Fitch trades gift cards for resold clothing as part of Thredup partnership

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has upped its sustainability efforts through a new clothing resale partnership with e-thrift store Thredup.

Part of Thredup's 'Resale-as-a-Service' platform, the partnership allows consumers to send used or unwanted clothing and accessories to Thredup, in exchange for gift certificates that can be used to buy new products at any of the Abercrombie & Fitch Co. brands, including Abercrombie, Abercrombie Kids, Hollister and Gilly Hicks.

In order to participate, customers can request a Thredup 'clean out kit' or print out a prepaid shipping label to send any new or like-new women's or children's apparel, accessories and footwear from any brand to the resale marketplace. Once the items are processed, customers will receive their gift cards.

Previously, Thredup has partnered with companies including Target, Reformation and Gap for various 'closet clean out' initiatives.

The new partnership marks Abercrombie & Fitch's latest eco-friendly initiative since the company joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in 2019.

Earlier this month, Abercrombie & Fitch announced that it would be temporarily furloughing all retail staff in its North American and EMEA regions beginning April 12, as its stores in the regions remain temporarily closed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to a Marketwatch report, the retailer's stock has sunk 64.5% over the past year.
