Oysho unveils ambitious sustainability initiative

Oysho, Inditex’s underwear, sportswear and homeware brand, has launched a ‘Join Life’ collection that focuses on a more eco-conscious fashion and is part of the sustainability commitment adopted by the world’s largest fashion group.

With a global action plan, Oysho is moving towards a more sustainable future and commiting to promote change and minimise the social and environmental impact of all its processes.

As part of this effort, all pieces from the ‘Join Life’ collection are made with sustainable materials, such as organic cotton made from non-GMO seeds that have been grown with organic fertilisers, or Tencel – a fibre produced in a closed-circuit system originating from wood grown in sustainably-managed forests, which guarantee reforestation.

The fashion brand said that the production of recycled materials consumes less natural resources and produces less waste, reducing the environmental impact and protecting biodiversity.

The new Oysho collection includes pieces made from recycled polyester, produced using recycled plastic bottles; and recycled polyamide, which is obtained from waste like old fishing nets, carpets and offcut fabrics.

Additionally, the ‘Join Life’ project includes a more sustainable logistics infrastructure, eco-efficient stores, recycled packaging and a clothing collection programme.

Oysho said it works every year to reduce energy consumption and emissions derived from its logistics operation, by lengthening the life of its boxes, bags,  alarms and hangers, reusing them until they are no longer good, thus reducing the volume of waste.

NEW PACKAGING MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS FOR ONLINE ORDERS

Currently, 91% of Oysho’s stores are eco-efficient, and with the aim of reducing their environmental impact, a programme has been implemented which makes them save up to 20% on energy use and 50% on water use – thereby reducing the company’s CO2 emissions.

Along these lines, Oysho.com has also introduced new packaging for online orders, which comes from recycled materials and is backed by international certifications that promote sustainable forestry practices across the world.

As part of this social and environmental commitment, Inditex’s underwear, sports and homeware brand offers the possibility of dropping unwanted clothes in collection containers located in certain stores. All collected garments are donated to Caritas, where they are sorted and classified according to their most suitable destination.

The ‘Join Life’ project is part of Oysho’s commitment to respecting the environment, by guaranteeing the highest standards, using the planet’s resources more responsibly and constantly searching for new solutions for the environment.

Inditex president Pablo Isla has highlighted the group’s commitment to sustainability on several occasions, describing it as the “correct management of the group’s activities with the environment”, and has reinforced the importance of the eco-efficient store concept for the group. The company plans to make all stores eco-efficient by 2020.

Inditex has been named as the most sustainable retail company by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the second consecutive year. He has also talked about reducing water and energy consumption across the company’s operations and its Closing the Loop clothing collection programme.
