Five men's summer '18 trends straight out of Florence and Milan

The menswear collections for spring/summer 2018, presented at Pitti Uomo and Milan Fashion Week from June 13 to 19, featured five major trends worth noting for next summer, even as designers took elements already introduced last season such as nylon and jumpsuits. In a general manner, menswear continues to mutate into something more relaxed and light.

1) Perfectly pink

The colour, typically linked to women, infiltrated the modern man's wardrobe this season. But not hot pink. It was a paler shade, arriving pastel or like a washed-out purple, much more sellable to a customer who still considers himself conservative enough. No collections proposed head-to-toe pink, but rather several important pieces, which sported the trending colour for men, synonymous with softness.

2) Stripes

Want it, here it is! Already seen in past seasons, stripes are again part of the men's style canon. Wide, fine, vertical, horizontal, nautical, bi-coloured, multicoloured and even as reflective bands, stripes were absolutely everywhere; to be worn with each other or with other prints such as florals or checks. They came across all men's pieces, particularly knitwear, and are set to be the sign of next summer.

3) Nylon days

A symbol of lightness and versatility, nylon -- typically seen in performance and innovative apparel -- was seen across all the latest fashion collections. It was used, not only in pieces like the traditional windcheater, but in all types of clothing: from baggy rain pants for bikers and skiers, to casual coats and other impermeable jackets, to the ever-present floaty parachute coats. But it was the worker jumpsuit in an ultra-light nylon, which dominated the nylon trend.

3) Transparent PVC

Impermeable jackets or shirts in transparent PVC appeared to please creative tastes this season, as designers went to town with this stratagem, to reveal -- without always showing it -- this underlying idea of recycled materials. Large bags, shown by several brands, already stand out as the 'it' bag for next summer.

5) Slider sandals

In the same vein, this sandal, sold daily for several euros across supermarkets, becomes the ultimate luxury fashion accessory, once fashion houses got their hands on it. Nothing is cooler than walking about in branded sliders and socks, a pair of shorts... and, the floaty overcoat.
